Klaus A. Schnitzer is an Emeritus Professor at Montclair State University in Montclair, NJ where he taught photography in the department of Art & Design from 1971 until his retirement in 2021.

His exhibition career consists of over 200 regional, national, and international shows. As a visiting artist he has lectured and taught at, among others, Haifa University (Israel), Tyler School of Art and the Chicago Art Institute. Consulting work include MIT (CC++ Consortium/Media Lab), Polaroid Corporation and the National Park Service.

He has received 16 grants from MSU, 4 from the Polaroid Foundation, 4 from the NJ Council on the Arts and a National Endowment for the Arts grant.

Klaus Schnitzer’s work can be found in numerous private collections as well as in the Museum of Modern Art, the Lower East Side Tenement Museum, Ellis Island Immigration Museum, Polaroid International Collection and BMW NA.

Commercial clients include AMOCO, Bell Communications, Bentley Publishers, BMW, Design News, Ilford Inc., KPMG Peat Marwick, Maersk Data AS, Montclair Art Museum, Newark Museum, Skip Barber Racing School.

A genuine interest in cars fostered Klaus Schnitzer’s ‘other’ career as automotive photographer and writer. Assignments often take him to Europe and have resulted in books, feature articles and more than 110 cover photographs for national and international publications. His name has appeared on the mastheads of Bimmer, Sports Car International and Roundel magazines.

He has contributed to Automobile Magazine, Car & Driver, Excellence, Forza, Bimmer Life, BMW Magazine and Vintage Motorsports.

He has written over 200 automotive articles with a concentration on BMW.

His latest book project was the photography for ‘The Power of M’, celebrating 50 years of BMW M (2022)
